Big victory for India, UK HC clears fugitive businessman Nirav Modi’s extradition

In a major victory, a UK High court on Wednesday ruled that fugitive businessman Nirav Modi will be extradited to India. 

New Delhi: In a major victory, a UK High court on Wednesday ruled that fugitive businessman Nirav Modi will be extradited to India. The High Court said, in its order that extraditing Modi back to India will not be ”unjust” or ”oppressive”. In India, Nirav Modi is accused of 13,500-crore PNB fraud and money laundering.

Nirav, 51, run away from India in February 2018 after the anti-corruption agencies launched an investigation against him. In June 2018, it was found that Nirav is the UK after he applied for political asylum.

Notably, the order came almost a month after the court reserved its judgment on Nirva’s plea on October 12. In his plea to the court, the fugitive businessman said that he was in depression and that by extradition to India, his condition could get worse. He also said, there is a hostile environment in the country.

After the extradition gets completed, Nirav will be brought to Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail where he will also be offered adequate medical assistance.
