New Delhi: In a tragic development, the son of Punjab IAS officer Sanjay Popli committed suicide today at his residence in Chandigarh. Reports suggest that gunshots were heard at the IAS officer’s residence today noon.

Moments later, it came to light that arrested IAS officer’s son killed himself by firing gunshots. The police personnel led by SSP Kuldeep Chahal have reached the spot and sealed the area.

Sanjay Popli, the 2008 batch IAS officer is currently behind bars in a graft case and has also been booked under Arms Act. According to reports, the officer’s son was studying in college and was upset with corruption charge against his father.

The arrest of IAS came on back of a complaint in which the IAS officer was accused of demanding commission in a government project. A local contractor had lodged complaint against him in the Anti-corruption helpline and also submitted phone recordings of bribe demand by the officer.

The IAS officer was booked by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau, after initial probe, for allegedly demanding 1% bribe for clearing a tender for laying down of sewerage pipes in Nawanshahr. This sewerage project, cost Rs 7 crore was started during Congress regime. The IAS officer was arrested and produced before the court, following which he was sent to 4-day police custody.

The IAS officer has also been booked under the Arms Act over possession of unaccounted cartridges. The Vigilance Bureau team found more than 70 accounted live cartridges from his house during searches.
