Chorus for ‘1 nation, 1 law’: Uniform Civil Code (UCC) gets support from Congress MP

Tulsi said that Muslim women need to be protected and their human rights be restored and the UCC will only facilitate this.

New Delhi: There is growing clamour for ‘1 nation, 1 law’ in the nation and it got fresh boost with Congress Parliamentarian KTS Tulsi extending support for the law.

Congress party has remained hesitant rather opposed to the contentious proposal and believes that it would ride roughshod over existing laws of different religions, Muslims in particular, and hence needs elaborate discussion. However, party MP doesn’t concur with it and said that UCC is the need of the hour. Tulsi said that Muslim women need to be protected and their human rights be restored and UCC will facilitate this.

Under the UCC, practices like polygamy will become a criminal act and punishable with jail terms. It is this clause, which has riled up Muslim leaders AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi who believe that UCC will deprive them of rights & privileges as currently prescribed under Islamic law.

On the other hand, BJP ruled states have made a strong pitch for the ‘one nation, one law’. From Uttar Pradesh to Uttarakhand to Assam, the chief ministers of these states have categorically spoken about the need of law and taken steps in this direction.

Cong MP endorses Assam CM’s statement on UCC

Congress MP’s statement comes in the backdrop of Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stating that UCC is necessary to give justice to Muslim women.
Sarma said, “Everybody wants UCC. No Muslim woman wants her husband to have 3 wives. Ask any Muslim woman. UCC is not my issue, it is an issue for all Muslim women. If they are to be given justice, after the scrapping of Triple Talaq, UCC will have to be brought”.

BJP slams Cong for opposing UCC

BJP spokesperson Shehzaad Poonawala slammed the Congress party for its opposition to the law.

“Congress, which says it stands for Mahila, always stands with kattar Maulana,” he said in a stinging jibe.
