Cyclone Mocha: IMD expects low-pressure system to intensify into cyclonic storm over Bay of Bengal

As per the Meteorological Department, the system is expected to intensify gradually into a cyclonic storm by May 10.

New Delhi: Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea are affected by a low-pressure wind system that is expected to become Cyclone Mocha and is also a reason for relief from the heatwave in North and North-East India. As per the Meteorological Department, the system is expected to intensify gradually into a cyclonic storm by May 10. IMD has also issued heavy rain warnings in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, DG of IMD, said that Cyclone Mocha will continue to move and intensify. It is expected to move towards the central part of the Bay of Bengal and by May 12, it will be over the central part of East Central Bay of Bengal.

He added that the department is expecting it to turn into a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ over the central Bay of Bengal, but the cyclone will change its path from May 12 onwards and will move towards Bangladesh and Myanmar’s coasts.

The cyclone is the reason for heavy winds and unwanted rains in coastal India while Andaman and Nicobar Islands are expected to be hit by heavy rains which might impact the tourists and the tourism industry. The expected speed of the storm is 60 kmph and can go up to 80-100 kmph in the next two days. Fishermen are also not allowed to enter the Andaman Sea from May onwards.

IMD on cyclone mocha

Some meteorologists have not classified it yet as a cyclone as it is a low-pressure system causing storms. As per the statement by IMD, it will form a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal in the coming days.

As the storm turns into a cyclone, it will be named Mocha as given by Yemen.

The storm is moving toward Visakhapatnam and is expected to impact Odisha before it changes course toward Bangladesh and Myanmar.
