Delhi minister Rajendra Pal Gautam resigns after row over “conversion oath”

The presence of Rajendra Pal in this program and the alleged statement on God were criticized by the BJP

New Delhi: Delhi minister and Aam Aadmi Party MLA Rajendra Pal Gautam, who triggered controversy over a “conversion oath” during a Buddhism event recently, resigned from the cabinet on Sunday. Hundreds of people denounced Hinduism and accepted the Buddhist faith at the event.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been criticizing the AAP-led ruling state government for hurting the Hindu sentiments, demanding it removes the social welfare minister from his position.

A source revealed that AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal was “extremely displeased” with Gautam.

A BJP delegation has also met with Delhi’s deputy commissioner of police to get a complaint filed against the legislator.

Gautam had attended a Buddhist event on Wednesday, on the occasion of Ashoka Vijaya Dashamiat Ambedkar Bhawan in Jhandewalan, which turned out to be a conversion event wherein nearly 10,000 individuals embraced Buddhism.

The matter came to the fore when a video of the incident surfaced online which showed a monk, sharing the stage with Gautam, administering an oath to the persons of the Hindu faith: “I will have no faith in Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, nor will I worship them as God. I will have no faith in Rama or Krishna, nor will I worship them. I will have no faith in Gauri, Ganapati and other Hindu Gods, nor will I worship them.”

In the now-viral video, Rajendra Pal Gautam can be seen taking the oath as well.
