ED dismisses coercion allegations by Xiaomi, says due procedure followed

The investigative agency said that the Xiaomi officials had deposed before it under FEMA in the most conducive environment

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday dismissed allegations of Xiaomi India officials and said that all due procedures were followed in recording their statement. It dubbed the reports of recording their statement under coercion as ‘untrue and baseless’.

The officials of Chinese mobile company had reportedly complained that their statement was taken under duress.

This comes in the backdrop of ED seizing more than Rs 5,500 crore assets of Xiaomi over alleged money laundering. The agency was probing the electronics company since February for alleged forex violations & even questioned senior management of the India unit. Last month, it seized the assets of Indian arm of Xiaomi, Chinese smartphone maker, for making illegal remittances to foreign entities and showing them as royalty payments.

The investigative agency said that the Xiaomi officials had deposed before it under FEMA in the most conducive environment.

“The statements corroborate with the written replies & materials submitted by the company,” said the ED in a statement.

The ED also called the bluff of Chinese company by stating that no such coercion was complaint was filed during the recording of statements. It was made only after the order for seizing its multi-crore assets was issued on April 29.
