Explained: Reason behind why prices of Atta shoot up in India?

It is reported that the price of wheat flour is 9.15 per cent higher than the price recorded a year ago at Rs. 30.03 per kg on the same date. 

New Delhi: The average retail price of Atta across India was on May 7 recorded at Rs. 32.78 per kg, according to the data provided by the State Civil Supplies Department to the Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ministry. It is reported that the price of wheat flour is 9.15 per cent higher than the price recorded a year ago at Rs. 30.03 per kg on the same date.

In April 2022, the monthly average price of wheat flour was recorded at Rs. 32.38 per kg, which is said to be the highest since January 2010.

Atta sold at the highest price in Port Blair

As per the data of the government for May 7, the price of wheat flour was recorded at the highest in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ capital Port Blair (Rs 59/kg) whereas the lowest price of Rs.22/kg was registered in West Bengal’s Purulia.

The data is collected from the 156 centers.

Among the Metro Cities, the residents of Mumbai are buying wheat flour at Rs. 49/kg followed by Chennai at Rs. 34/kg, Kolkata at Rs. 22/kg, Delhi at Rs 27 per kg.

Overall the price of wheat increased 5.81 per cent since the start of this year.

Why does Atta Price shoot up suddenly in India?

Now, the question arises why the prices of atta are continuously rising in the country. The biggest reason is said to be the jump in wheat prices due to less production. Market experts suggest the ongoing war in Ukraine is also one of the reasons for decrease in production

Moreover, the stock of wheat in our country is also witnessing a down. Besides, the prices of domestic fuel also added to the cost of both wheat and flour.
