New Delhi: Reaching out to the senior and elderly residents, Delhi Police has kick-started a unique initiative for their safety and security from external as well as domestic threats.

“Ghanti Bajao, Police Bulao,” service, exclusively for senior citizens, was launched by Rajouri Garden Police Station (West Delhi) on the International Day of Older Persons via video link.

Police personnel distributed 400 alarm bells to the elderly living alone in the area. In case of any emergency or crisis, they can press the alarm bell and police will quickly act on receiving the SOS message.

The initiative was launched under direct supervision of SHO Anil Kumar Sharma, ACP Sudesh Ranga, DCP West and overall supervision of Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police through video conferencing.

How alarm bells will alert Delhi Police

Under the scheme, the speaker of these alarm bells will be kept on the stairs or outside the house of close neighbours. When the alarm is raised, either they will inform the police station or any patrol team would act on hearing the SOS ring. These neighbours will be informed and sensitized about this service in next few days. They will have to dial 112 if they hear any alarm ringing from senior citizen’s residence.

Senior citizens have been advised to carry the alarm bell in their pockets all the time, so that they can press the emergency button if any crisis strikes them.

“Senior citizens will have to keep the bell button with themselves while the equipment would be fixed in the house of some friendly neighbor. In apartments, it will be put in lobbies so that the securitymen can hear it and alert the police. The alarm can be heard till 25 metres with 6 different sounds,” said DCP (West) Deepak Purohit.

Alarm bells to be helpful in these situations

The scheme’s primary focus is on the safety and security of senior citizens, who are living alone and away from their respective families.

1. In case of an armed intrusion in the guise of a service provider like BSES, MTNL, PNG, ZOMATO, AMOZON, FLIPKART etc

2. In case of Medical emergency like Heart ailment, epilepsy, brain haemorrhage or complication of Corona Pandemic.

3. In case of physical assault either by immediate family member or by distant relative etc.

“After the alarm is raised, it will trigger immediate assistance in next 10 seconds, followed by medical and police team reaching the elderly’s residence within 3-4 minutes. This will go a long way in saving precious human life,” said Delhi Police.

West Delhi has about 2,000 senior citizens staying alone, with over 800 in Rajouri Garden. In first phase, Delhi Police has distributed 400 alarm bells and if it yields desired results, the scheme will be extended to more areas.

Meanwhile, those elderly residents who didn’t get alarm bells in 1st phase have already requested for the device in next phase of distribution.
