‘Govt has zero-tolerance policy on drugs’: Amit Shah in Lok Sabha

He said that countries are using the profits from drugs to promote terrorism in India and the presence of this dirty money gradually hollows the economy.

New Delhi: Home Minister Amit Shah spoke in the Lok Sabha about the zero-tolerance policy on drugs. During the winter session of the Parliament, Lok Sabha is discussing the problem of drug abuse under Rule 193. Amit Shah also participated in the discussion and spoke about the dream of a ‘drugs-free India’.

Talking about drug abuse and steps taken by the government, Amit Shah said that the government has a ‘zero-tolerance policy’ towards the issue of drugs. He said that countries are using the profits from drugs to promote terrorism in India and the presence of this dirty money gradually hollows the economy. He added that all the states and Union Territories have to together fight the problem of drugs and need to stop the entry of drugs through borders, ports and airports.

Talking about the role of agencies, Amit Shah said that the Revenue department and NCB have to work against the menace while being on the same page. Shah said that NCB is there to help in inter-state probes and NIA can help the states with the overseas probe. On the government’s policy, he said that those consuming drugs are victims and while being sensitive towards them, they are needed to be given a conducive atmosphere for their rehabilitation. He added that those involved in drug trafficking should not be spared. He also talked about giving rights to BSF and agencies to seize drugs.

The discussions under Rule 193 do not involve a formal motion or voting, also the member who raises the discussion has no right to reply. Various leaders from different parties took part in the discussion, including Jugal Kishore Sharma, and Sri Krishna Devarayalu Lavu.
