IPL 2023: Mumbai Police arrests 5 involved in betting during MI vs KKR game

Mumbai Police, in a statement, said that they have recovered cash, nine mobile phones, three sim cards, two debit cards, five IPL match tickets and a passport.

New Delhi: Mumbai Police arrested five people from Wankhede Stadium in the IPL betting case. Crime branch unit 6 of Mumbai Police tapped people using mobile apps and betting during the game between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders on April 16. The police acted after getting information about a betting racket operating in the city.

Mumbai Police, in a statement, said that they have recovered cash, nine mobile phones, three sim cards, two debit cards, five IPL match tickets and a passport.

Mumbai Police said that they found that the five suspects were sending ball-to-ball updates and it is suspected that they were betting since the matches on TV are put off for some time. The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the IPC, IT Act 2000 and The Public Gambling Act, 1867.

The police is currently investigating the case.

 

In the game, Venkatesh Iyer scored a century and helped KKR to reach a score of 185. Apart from his 104 off 51, only Andre Russell managed to make a significant contribution with 21* off 11. Hrithik Shokeen picked two wickets while Piyush Chawla ended up with the figures of 19/1. While the MI pacers went for runs, Cameron Green, Duan Jensen and Riley Meredith picked a wicket each.

Ishan Kishan scored a cracking 58 off 25 and Suryakumar Yadav came back in touch with 43 off 25 to chase the score. Tim David contributed 24 0ff 13 while Tilak Varma and Rohit Sharma scored 30(25) and 20(13) respectively.

Suryakumar Yadav led MI in the first inning as Rohit caught a stomach bug and came in to bat as an Impact Player. Arjun Tendulkar made his IPL debut in the game.
