J&K: Cleric openly spews venom, threatens to behead Nupur Sharma; booked

Police have registered a case against the cleric over incendiary speeches and also warned people against taking the law into their own hands.

New Delhi: Jammu & Kashmir Police have booked a local Muslim cleric in Bhaderwah town for spewing venom against the other community and opnely making a call to decpitate suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

The cleric standing atop a mosque in Dodo region of J&K openly hurled abuses at the other community and made several hateful remarks, the video of which spread like wildfire on social media last evening.

The cleric identified as Adil Gafoor Ganai, made extremely provocative & inflammtory speech from a mosque in Bhaderwah town.

The hatemonger cleric made a series of spiteful remarks on the Hindu community and allegedly termed them as ‘cow urine drinkers’ & ‘cow-dung eaters.’

Following the hate speech, tension has gripped the region with the other faction opposing the inflammatory references. The state administration has clamped curfew in the area, anticipating trouble after Friday prayers, and has called the Army in Bhaderwah town of Doda district to keep communal forces at bay. The Army will also hold a flag march in the area.

Mobile services have also been shut down in adjoining Kishtwar district as part of precautionary measure.

Police have registered a case against the cleric over incendiary speeches and also warned people against taking the law into their own hands. Purported video clips of the inflammatory speeches went viral on social media, last evening.

Police have registered case under IPC sections 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) at Police Station Bhaderwah.

Reacting to the cleric’s hate speech, the Union Minister Jitendra Singh said that the situation was deeply disturbing. NC leader & former J&K CM Omar Abdullah tweeted, “Hope cooler heads prevail. I appeal everyone to maintain calm.”

Meanwhile, the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police has lodged 2 cases in connection with hate speeches, that followed the Nupru Sharma controversy over blasphemy charges against her. A couple of political leaders as well as some noted people have been named.
