Jahangirpuri Violence Case: Delhi court grants interim bail to accused to appear in college exams

The riot took place between two groups during a Hanuman Jayanti procession and left eight police personnel and a civilian injured

New Delhi: Suraj Sarkar, an accused in the Jahangirpuri violence case, has been granted interim bail by the Delhi Court. The bail was granted on the pretext of his BA examinations. Suraj is a student in BA Program and his exams are to be held from June 3 to June 28, 2022.

Additional sessions judge Gagandeep Singh of Rohini District Court granted the interim bail till 18 June 2022. According to the court directions, he has to submit a bail bond in the sum of Rs. 50,000 as well as a surety bond in the like amount.

The court has directed Suraj Sarkar not to leave Delhi without prior information to Investigation Officer (IO). He also has to provide the details about his mobile numbers and whereabouts. The court order also stated that he has to mark his presence before the IO on every alternative day.

The application submitted by the counsel stated that Suraj will be giving his IV semester examinations. The hall ticket for sitting for the examination at Satyavati College centre was received by his parents, who said if he is not granted bail his future will be spoiled.

The prosecution opposed the bail by stating that the accused is involved in a serious offence of riots and may flee from justice if granted bail. The court granted the interim bail after imposing several conditions.

The ongoing case concerns the violent clashes that broke out in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on April 16. The riots took place between two groups during a Hanuman Jayanti procession and left eight police personnel and a civilian injured.
