‘Laudatory thought which will help…’: PM Modi appreciates CJI DY Chandrachud’s remarks on making SC judgments available in regional languages

New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi lauded Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud for his remarks on making Supreme Court’s judgments available in regional languages. PM shared a video of CJI speaking at an event about making the judgements available in regional languages and using technology for the same. He also shared that the government is working towards encouraging Indian languages in studies.

PM Modi wrote, that CJI DY Chandrachud’s words are a ‘laudatory thought’ and will help the youngsters. He added that India has many languages which are part of the culture and the Central Government is encouraging people to use Indian languages, which will give them an option of studying subjects like engineering and medicine in their mother tongue.

Justice DY Chandrachud participated in the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa felicitation function, where he said that the next step of the mission is to provide translations of the SC judgements in every Indian language. He added that his judgments are reaching the privileged lawyers but what about litigants in rural areas who do not understand English? He said that the legal work is not reaching 99% of the people.

He said that there is a technological divide, but the mission is that the technology reaches those who do not have access. He talked about removing the barriers to access.

The Bar Council felicitated CJI DY Chandrachud. The program was part of the Bar Council’s one-day basic legal education programme.
