Nagaland firing: Vehicle was signalled to stop but it tried to speed away; suspecting extremists in vehicle, it was fired upon, says Amit Shah

A day after the reported civilian killings by security forces, the state government on Sunday prohibited all mobile internet, data services, bulk SMS of all providers in the entire area of Mon district with immediate effect.

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah gave a statement on the Nagaland firing incident in the Lok Sabha today.

Some Naga youth were reportedly killed in Oting village of Nagaland’s Mon district on Saturday when they were allegedly fired at by security forces, who suspected them to be terrorists.

Amit Saha’s statement:

# In a bid to avert any more incidents in the affected area, additional forces have been deployed. A press statement has been issued by Army’s III Corps HQ where the incident of the unfortunate deaths of innocent civilians has been regretted.

#Army has taken up investigation into the reasons behind this incident at the highest level, action will be taken as per the law. I immediately contacted the Governor and CM of the state after receiving the news of the incident. MHA also contacted the Chief Secretary & DGP

# Current situation is tense but under control. On 5th Dec, Nagaland DGP & Commissioner visited the site. FIR registered & keeping the seriousness in mind, probe handed over to State Crime Police Station. SIT formed, it has been directed to complete probe within a month

# We’ve decided that every agency will ensure that in actions against insurgents, such incidents do not happen in the future. Needed decisions are being taken by the govt as well.

# During the ambush in Nagaland on 4th December 2021 evening, a vehicle reached near the ambush. A battalion tried to stop the vehicle, but it didn’t stop. On suspicion of the vehicle having insurgents, the vehicle was attacked. 6 of the 8 people in the vehicle were killed.

# The Army took the injured 2 to the nearest medical centre. The local people on getting the news surrounded the battalion, burned 2 vehicles and attacked them. We lost 1 soldier and several others were injured.

# 7 other civilians were also injured in these clashes. The situation is under control now. SIT has been formed for a special investigation in this matter and it has to submit its report in 30 days.

# Our Army has also released a press release in which they’ve expressed pain due to these losses. Such misfortunate incidents are being investigated by the Army as well at the highest level.

Nagaland firing incident

Reportedly, irked villagers torched vehicles of security forces and some people were reportedly shot when security forces opened fire to control the irate mob.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Sunday ordered a high-level probe into the reported killings of civilians by security forces and the government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe into the matter.

The Indian Army has expressed regret over the incident and said it is being investigated at the highest level.

Shah on Sunday expressed anguish over the incident and conveyed condolences to bereaved families.

Meanwhile, the winter session of the Parliament commenced on November 29 and will continue till December 23.
