New Delhi: Captain Vikram Batra’s bravery and martyrdom has been penned with golden letters in Indian history. He led the successful operation of capturing Point 4875, which is now called the Batra Top, during the Kargil War. While India can never forget his story as a warrior, there is another immortal story about him. The love story of Captain Vikram Batra and Dimple Cheema.
On his 48th birthday, let us revisit Captain’s story of love. Vikram Batra and Dimple Cheema met during their university days in Chandigarh. He was pursuing an MA in English from Punjab University when they became friends and soon fell for each other. Later they decided to marry, but Dimple’s family disapproved of their relationship. Going against her family’s will, she promised Vikram to marry him.
The couple frequently visited Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, and during one of their visits, Batra walked behind Dimple holding her dupatta during the parikrama. After the parikrama ended, Batra turned to Dimple and said, “Congratulations, Mrs Batra.”He was really filmy when it came to romance. There is a popular incident about him cutting his thumb with a blade to fill Dimple’s ‘maang’.
After Captain Vikram Batra lost his life, fighting in the Kargil War, Dimple decided to live as his widow. She dedicated her life to his love and the memories she has and decided to not marry anyone else. She still proudly says she loves him.
Their love story is beautifully depicted in the film ‘Shershaah’ where Sidharth Malhotra played the role of Captain Vikram Batra while Kiara Advani played Dimple Cheema. The film is available on Amazon Prime Video.
