New Delhi: The Barrack No 10 of Punjab’s Patiala Central jail has become a high-profile destination for state’s top political figures landing up in prison. The particular Barrack houses cricketer turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu and the latest to join him in the jail is pop singer Daler Mehndi.
The Punjabi pop-singer Daler Mehndi was sentenced to two years jail on Thursday in a human trafficking case dating back to 2003. The Patiala court upheld the previous punishment of 2 years awarded to him during 2018 hearing. Soon after, the singer was arrested by cops and taken to Patiala Central Jail.
The two VIP personalities will stay together in the Barrack No 10 of the central jail. Navjot Sidhu & Daler Mehndi are both popular public figures and both of them created a big name for themselves in previous phase of their life.
However, these are not just the two high-profile inmates here. Other prominent names serving sentence in Patiala jail include Bikram Singh Majithia, the brother-in-law of former deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Ex-police constable Balwant Singh Rajoana, the death row convict in ex-CM Beant Singh’s assassination case is also serving punishment in adjacent cells.
Majithia’s barrack is just adjacent to Sidhu & Daler. He was booked under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act and imprisoned since February 24.
While Mehndi and Majithia are not on a special diet, Sidhu is on a special diet as prescribed by the doctors because of his medical conditions. Sidhu consumes mostly fruits and vegetables as part of his high fibre, low-fat diet. Meals are prepared without butter, desi ghee, or any other saturated fatty oils.
As all the special cells in the Punjab jails have been replaced with ordinary prisons under new AAP govt, all big profile prisoners have to now abide by the rules & stay in ordinary barracks.
Majithia eats “normal food” like his fellow inmates. Majithia & Sidhu were once close friends but their differences have been widening for quite some time now.
