Punjab AAP MLA Balbir Singh sentenced to three-year jail, convicted in a criminal case

The case dates back to 2011, where he & his associates attacked fellow family members over a dispute relating to tiling of land.

New Delhi: In a major blow to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab, its legislator Balbir Singh was on Monday sentenced to three-year jail term and handed over a penalty of Rs 5,000 in a criminal case. Along with him, his wife and son were also awarded 3 years rigorous imprisonment.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ravi Inder Singh announced the judgement, holding him guilty in a criminal case. However, the legislator was also granted bail by the court.

The case dates back to 2011, where he & his associates attacked fellow family members over a dispute relating to tiling of land.

A case was lodged against the AAP MLA on June 13, 2011 over complaint of his wife’s sister Rupinderjit Kaur & her husband Mewa Singh. The duo alleged that Balbir Singh along with other accused assaulted them near Chamkaur Sahib, while they were going to irrigate their fields.

Another AAP MLA which recently faced the heat of investigative agencies is Jaswant Singh, legislator from Amargarh. The CBI conducted raids at his residence in first week of May in connection with 40.92 crore bank fraud case. The sleuths charged him with borrowing crore of money from Bank of India’s Ludhiana branch on pretext of using it for business but instead siphoned off the money for other purposes.
