Punjab cops thrash Sikh youth at police chowki, toss his turban; VIDEO surfaces

Last late night, many people assembled at the Vijay Nagar police chowki and gheraoed the police officials. It was only after assurance of action against the accused policemen that the people left the police chowki.

New Delhi: In a brazen incident of police excesses in Punjab, a Sikh youth was badly beaten by the constables at a police chowki in Amritsar. The constables also tossed the turban of youth and dragged him by the hair. As the video of high-handedness went viral on social media, it drew strong condemnation from the political class as well as the citizens.

Last late night, many people assembled at the Vijay Nagar police chowki and gheraoed the police officials. It was only after the senior officials assured of action against the accused policemen that the people left the police chowki.

The incident happened on Tuesday, when two groups came to the police station after taking up a fight. Police tried to settle the matter but the two factions kept on arguing. It was then a police constable grabbed the youth and started beating him inside the chowki. While thrashing the youth, he also tossed his turban, grabbed his hair and dragged him inside. The victim is identified as Kashmir Singh and is known to be a journalist by profession.

The gross & inhuman treatment by police personnel has raised the hackles of locals & the Sikh community.

Political rivals slam Punjab cops

Political parties, taking objection to inhuman behaviour, slammed the cops and called for immediate & strict punishment.

SAD president Sukhbir Singh tweeted, “Disgraceful to the max! The video coming from Amritsar has reaffirmed that the Punjab Police is out of control. Appeal to CM Bhagwant Singh Mann to immediately give strict punishment to this policeman so that someone thinks 100 times before touching any Sikh’s dastar.”

Other parties also expressed strong reservations over the incident and claimed that Punjab police was going out of hand under Bhagwant Mann administration.
