Punjab govt cuts down electricity price by Rs 3, ahead of Assembly elections slated for next year

Ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has announced to reduce the electricity price by Rs 3.

New Delhi: Punjab is gearing up for Legislative Assembly elections next year. Making a major announcement ahead of polls, the Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi on Monday announced that his cabinet has decided to cut down electricity prices by Rs 3 with immediate effect. Besides, it will provide benefit to 95% of the residents in Punjab, claimed Channi in a press conference.

The slashed electricity rate will significantly benefit the people of state.

“The electricity that we have bought today is for Rs 2.65. When we did a survey, people told us that they do not want free but cheap electricity,” said Channi while making the announcement.

“Our rate now is Rs 1.19 up to 100 watts. From 100 to 300 units, the new power rates will be Rs 4 per unit, earlier, it used to be Rs 7. And above 300 units, people will get electricity at the rate of Rs 5 per unit,” he added.

Besides, Channi claimed that Rs 3,316 crore will be spent per year on power subsidies. “Punjab already bears ₹ 10,628 crores on power subsidy and now total subsidy is 14,000 crores, which is seven times than what Delhi spends on the same. Delhi spends ₹ 2,200 crores,” he stated.

Electricity

Previously, for 100 to 300 units, consumers were charged Rs 7 per unit. However, now they will be charged Rs 4 per unit for the same. Besides, for more than 300 units, charges were Rs 8.76 per unit, which will be now charged at Rs 5.76 per unit.
