Restoring Kanpur as Manchester of the East: Mega leather park in city to create 50,000 jobs, bring 6,000 cr investment
In just three years, the UP Government has received 23 proposals for setting up industries in Kanpur city and Kanpur rural. About 7,000 people will get employment once these projects worth around Rs 4,000 crore are off the ground and running.
New Delhi: Kanpur, the city of Uttar Pradesh popularly known as the Manchester of the East, will soon see its lost glory restored with the efforts of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The city will once again be humming with intense industrial activity and shining on the world map as many big industrialists of the country are showing keen interest in setting up their units in and around Kanpur.
Many of these industrialists have invested in sectors ranging from textiles to manufacturing. Apart from this, a Mega Leather Park is being built in Kanpur. Spread over an area of 235 acres, the park is part of the Mega Leather Cluster Project and will provide employment to 50,000 people while bringing an investment of Rs 5,850 crore.
With this dream project of CM Yogi, Kanpur will once again be known as the Textile Hub and the Leather City. Kanpur, an industrial city situated on the banks of the Ganges, is considered one of the major cities of India. It was called the ‘Manchester of the East’ because of the textile industry. Kanpur was also called the ‘Leather City’ because of the presence of a large number of leather factories.
But, with increasing pollution, technological changes in the textile industry and neglect of the previous governments, this city kept losing its sheen.
It became one of the most polluted cities of the country.
Leather Park project to restore Kanpur’s Leather City status
However, CM Yogi has been determined to restore Kanpur’s glorious history and its global acclaim as an industrial city ever since he took charge as the chief minister of UP in 2017. Under his guidance, the Mega Leather Park Project was designed to reestablish Kanpur as the Textile Hub and Leather City.
Proposals were received from industrialists for setting up firms and they were contacted by the government agencies to streamline the process.
The industrialists were told about the amendments in policies that the Yogi Government has brought in to attract investments and make establishment of firms a hassle-free affair across the state.
According to the officials of the Industrial Development Department, the policy changes made by the Yogi Government has encouraged many leading entrepreneurs to set up their firms in Kanpur, including in textile sector.
Mega leather park to employ 50,000, bring investment of Rs 5,850 crore

Meanwhile, out of 23 investment proposals, 11 have already seen the light of the day and the industrial units are in a position to start production soon.
According to officials, RP Polypacks and Kanpur Plastics Limited have set up textile factories in Kanpur city and Kanpur (Rural) at the cost of Rs 150 crore Rs 200 crore respectively and have already started production. Similarly, Sparsh India Private Limited has invested Rs 600 crore for the construction of a plastic factory in Kanpur (Rural). Furthermore, Rimjhim Steel Company is building a steel rolling mill in Kanpur (Rural) at the cost of Rs 550 crore. The Government has also started working on setting up non-polluting industries in multi-storeyed buildings in Kanpur.
The Mega Leather Park, will, nevertheless, prove to be a game changer for Kanpur. The 235 acres of land has already been acquired and the work is progressing rapidly on this project. The leather park will be built in Ramaipur village of Kanpur. The Ministry of Commerce of the Central Government has already given its consent for the establishment of this park. This will be the first leather park in the country.
The park will help improve Kanpur’s position among the ten largest leather manufacturing states of the country. Under the Mega Leather Cluster Project, 50,000 people will get direct employment at the leather park while 1.5 lakh people will get indirect employment. Besides, more than 150 tanneries will function at this park. The park will not only facilitate manufacturing of world class leather shoes, purses and jackets, but also its export to other countries.
