Sonia Gandhi congratulates Team India on emphatic series win against Aus

New Delhi: Sonia Gandhi congratulated the team cricket team on Wednesday for their emphatic series win against Australia.

She wrote, Dear Team India, Like millions of Indians, I am jubilant and so very proud at your magnificent, heroic and historic victory at Brisbane. Your performance, against incredible odds,  has brought glory to India, and shone the international spotlight on the superb quality of Team India’s players. It has also demonstrated the discipline, the physical and mental toughness, and the exemplary team spirit that resulted in this victory and will bring the team many other victories in future!

‘The Indian team’s performance at Brisbane, where Australia has never lost a test match for over 30 years; the strength and grace with which each of you faced difficult conditions of quarantine and racial abuse; and the fighting spirit you displayed has won you the admiration and respect of the whole country and brought  us  joy  and  hope indeed, a shot in the arm, that we sorely needed during a particularly difficult time.’, she added

Rahul Gandhi and other party leaders also congratulated the people of the country on the Indian cricket team”s historic series win against Australia.

On Tuesday, Australia’s fortress — The Gabba — was finally breached. It took 32 years and two months, but the unthinkable was achieved as an injury-ravaged young Indian team beat Australia by three wickets against all odds in the final Test of the series at The Gabba.

The last time a visiting team came out triumphant from the Brisbane Cricket Ground was back in November 1988 when the mighty West Indian outfit under the leadership of Viv Richards thrashed Allan Border’s team by 9 wickets. What makes the feat even more commendable is how the Indians fought multiple injuries and mental fatigue – due to the bio-bubble restrictions — to register a historic win.

Rishabh ‘nerves of steel’ Pant will be forgiven for all the mistakes he has made through the series with wicket-keeping gloves in hand as each of the 89 runs that he scored in the final hour on Tuesday was worth its weight in gold. It was only poetic justice that he hit a boundary to win India a thriller.
