SSC Scam: Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee arrested after Rs 20 crore seized from close aide

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee today, in connection with alleged money laundering in a teacher recruitment scam in the eastern state.

The action comes a day after Rs 20 crore cash was reportedly recovered from Chatterjee’s close aide Arpita Mukherjee on raids conducted on Friday.

Apart from cash, gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 50 lakh, as well as documents of at least 10 properties have been seized in the raids.

Following the recovery of cash and valuables, the Trinamool leader was grilled by ED throughout the night regarding the alleged scam and was arrested in the morning from his residence in Kolkata after he reportedly did not cooperate with the investigation team.

Over 20 mobile set were also recovered from the premises of Arpita Mukherjee.

“The said amount is suspected to be proceeds of crime of the said SSC scam”, the investigation agency said in a statement.

The central agency also raided multiple locations of current minister of State for Education Paresh C Adhikary, former West Bengal Board of Primary Education Manik Bhattacharya, and others in the alleged money laundery case.
