Tamil Nadu: Father-son duo dead after cracker-laden scooter explodes

A father riding along with his 7-year-old son on a two-wheeler scooter, carrying fire-crackers exploded, resulting in the death of the two on spot.

New Delhi: The father and his son riding a two-wheeler scooter were charred to death after the country-made firecrackers they were carrying exploded. The incident took place on Thursday at Villupuram district when Diwali was being celebrated across the country.

The CCTV footage has gone viral all over the internet which shows a scooter suddenly exploding after crossing a police barricade. Another person approaching from the other side loses control and falls on the road.

The boy was seated on two bundles of firecrackers kept tightly tied in the front of the two-wheeler. We believe that friction and pressure led to the explosion,” an officer investigating the incident told to NDTV. “The sudden appearance of the other two-wheelers from the opposite side could have led to a jerk, causing friction,” he added.

Three others, along with the person coming from the other side were injured. They were rushed to Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry for treatment.

The man who has been identified as Kalainesan from Ariyankuppam was travelling towards Puducherru to sell crackers along with his seven-year-old son named Pradeesh. Reportedly, he purchased firecrackers from his native place to sell them for Diwali. Kalainesan worked in an automobile parts company.

When asked whether the crackers were purchased from illegal factories, the officer stated, “these were made at legal units making country crackers.”

The Villupuram district police soon took up the case for investigation. Police stated that they have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash, and negligent driving.
