Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari arrives in Parliament in hydrogen car, nation’s 1st of its kind vehicle (VIDEO)

New Delhi: Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari garnered the attention of fellow lawmakers, when he reached the Parliament on wednesday in hydrogen-powered car Toyota Mirai.

The Minister, who has himself taken the lead in rolling out the pilot project, told reporters that this was another step towards ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. The car runs on green hydrogen which in turn is generated from water and thus is way cheaper than traditional fuel.

“Manufacturing of green hydrogen will begin in the country. Imports will be curbed and new job opportunities will appear,” the minister said.
Gadkari has often spoken about the need for transition from traditional fuel to green fuel and has encouraged fellow lawmakers to citizens to play active role in this transition.

Earlier, he said that he will travel in the hydrogen car on Delhi roads to spread awareness among public, as part of the pilot project.

The car can reportedly cover 600 kilometres on a full tank. Filling up of hydrogen tank of car also comes handy and the cost per km comes just at Rs 2/km.

“Toyota Company from Japan has given me a vehicle which runs on green Hydrogen. I will use it myself as a pilot project (on alternative fuel),” Gadkari had said, a month ago.

The transport minister recently launched India’s first hydrogen-based advanced Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Toyota Mirai. It can cover a distance of 845 miles without requiring refuelling.


Gadkari rolling into Parliament in a green car comes even as fuel prices continue to skyrocket and reach new highs. Petrol & diesel prices have been hiked multiple times in past 8 days.
