New Delhi: The Delhi Police Special Cell conducted searches at Twitter India offices in Delhi & Gurugram on Monday in connection with ‘Congress toolkit’ investigation.
After the searches at Twitter India offices, Delhi Police told mediapersons that they wanted to serve notice to the microblogging site and ask them to join probe into toolkit case but they didn’t find anyone at office.
A police official even said,“We have been asking Twitter in India to join the investigation, but they asked us to contact their parent company in the United States.”
Such poor disregard and deliberate ignorance of nation’s laws raises many questions about company’s operating standards.
It was Twitter which created a storm by tagging ‘manipulated media’ tag on BJP spokesperson’s tweets but when their participation is being sought in toolkit probe, the complaint has to be routed to its US based office in California.
Twitter interferes but no accountability b/c ‘no offices’ in India
Here are a couple of documents, apparently from Twitter website which put this fact loud and clear. It has been shared by Anil Tiwari, Founder and CEO of @WeUttarPradesh.
It says, “For people who live in US or outside the European Union or the European Economic Area, the data controller responsible for personal data is Twitter Inc, based in San Fransisco, California (US).”

This is not the end. If you have a grievance against any objectionable matter on Twitter, you can’t complain to its India office. It has to be routed to California office. India team merely serves as ‘support team’, it says.
Moreover, there are no India office address. If you want to contact them, you will only find either Ireland office or California office.
Row over Twitter’s overreach & overbearing approach
The controversy broke after Twitter had labelled a tweet posted by BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra as “manipulated media”.
Twitter even stated that it “may label Tweets that include media (videos, audio, and images) that have been deceptively altered or fabricated”.
