New Delhi: Due to heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand, a building of Doon Defence College in Maldevta, Dehradun, collapsed on Monday. The building was swept away by the strong currents of River Bandal, which overflowed due to continuous rainfall in the state over the past 24 hours.

Uttarakhand meterological department has issued a red alert for heavy rains in 6 districts including Dehradun and Nainital. The hilly state has been severely impacted by continuous monsoon rain, resulting in 60 reported deaths. Moreover, at least 17 people are currently missing.

Due to heavy rain, landslides have occurred, blocking various roads, including national highways.

Uttarakhand is reeling from the aftermath of a massive landslide near Kunjapuri Bagardhar, completely blocking the crucial Rishikesh-Chamba National Highway. As a result, the movement of heavy vehicles has come to a screeching halt at Sakhnidhar on the Rishikesh-Devprayag-Srinagar National Highways. The catastrophic event has caused extensive damage, with approximately 1,169 houses and a significant amount of agricultural land crumbling under the weight of the disaster.

Adding to the chaos, the authorities in Dehradun and Champawat have taken the precautionary measure of ordering the closure of all schools today due to heavy rain and severe flooding. The situation remains precarious, prompting the Uttarakhand government to issue directives to district magistrates and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to remain on high alert, ready to spring into action and lend a helping hand to those affected by any emergencies that may arise.

The impact of this natural calamity has left the region devastated, causing widespread disruption and upheaval.
