VIDEO: Rare rainbow coloured sun halo sighted in Dehradun; Internet thrilled

The sight prompted local residents to capture pictures and videos of the sun halo on their mobile phone cameras, which became crazy viral

New Delhi: The capital city of hill state Uttarakhand on a bright Sunday afternoon became witness to a rare phenomenon, leaving the locals and the Indian side of social media thrilled.

The sky of the northern city of Dehradun was glorified by a sun halo with rainbow colours. The sun halo, also known as ’22 degree halo’ is a rare optical phenomenon which gives a resemblance of a rainbow encircling the sun from a distance of nearly 22 degrees.

According to the director of the Meteorological Center Mr Bikram Singh, “The phenomenon is a result of sunlight getting refracted by the millions of hexagonal ice crystals hovering in the atmosphere”.

Experts advise not to view a sun halo with bare eyes as it can harm the eyes of an observer. Capturing the phenomenon without any obstruction can further harm the camera.

Meanwhile, the sight prompted local residents to capture pictures and videos of the sun halo on their mobile phone cameras, which became crazy viral leaving internet users awe-inspiring.
