New Delhi: Bollywood actress Swara Bhaskar announced her marriage to Political activist Fahad Ahmad on Wednesday (February 16). The couple submitted their documents to the court on January 6, 2023, and registered their marriage under the Special Marriage Act on February 16, 2023.

In India all marriages can be registered under the respective personal law Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, Muslim Marriage Act, 1954, or under the Special Marriage Act, 1954.  Under this special marriage Act, the judiciary ensures the rights of protection of both the husband and wife.

What is the Special Marriage Act?

Any marriage which is held under the  Special Marriage Act, 1954 allows individuals from two different religious backgrounds to come together and register their bond of marriage.

According to the Special Marriage Act, the couple has to serve a notice with the relevant documents to the Marriage Officer 30 days before the intended date of the marriage.

How is the Special Marriage Act Registered:

# To register the marriage under Special Marriage Act, both parties have to be present after submitting their documents for issuance of public notice inviting objections.

#The registration of the marriage is done only after 30 days of the notice period, in case any objections may have been received during that period by the SDM.

# On the date of registration, both parties have to be present with three witnesses.
