New Delhi: Siddique Kappan, a Kerala journalist has been released today after his bail was approved. He was arrested on terror charges more than two years ago while reporting on the alleged rape of a girl whose death sparked nationwide protests.
His release order was signed by a special court in Lucknow months after he got bail in the two cases against him.
Who is Siddique Kappan?
Siddique Kappan was arrested in October 2020 while he was on his way to Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras to report on alleged gang rape and death of young woman from a scheduled caste community.
Kappan is also the secretary of the Delhi unit of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ).
According to the Police, Siddique was arrested as he was going there to create unrest.
Siddique was accused of sedition and charged under the tough anti-terror law UAPA. The Enforcement Directorate filed a money laundering case against him in February 2022, he was accused of receiving money from the banned People’s Front of India.
Earlier on November 1, a local court in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow did not grant bail to the Kerala-based journalist in the money laundering case.
What he said after being released?
Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan said he had come out of jail after 28 months. He thanked the media for supporting him. He said false allegations were put against him.
