Who was Anna Mani? All you need to know about ‘Weather Woman of India’

New Delhi: Google Doodle is celebrating the 104th birth anniversary of India’s renowned physicist and meteorologist Anna Mani. Google, today paid a heartfelt tribute to her via a creative doodle.

It is because of her work as a physicist and meteorologist that has made it possible for Indian agencies to accurately predict the weather conditions of the country in the present day.

Who was Anna Mani?

Anna Mani, was born on August 23 in 1918 in Kerala (then it known as Travancore). Mani, after completing her  Bachelor of Science with honours in physics and chemistry from Presidency College, Madras, she taught at WCC for a year and won a scholarship for post-graduate studies at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

Then, under the guidance of Nobel Laureate Sir CV Raman, she studied spectroscopy, specializing in diamonds and rubies.

During the 1942 and 1945, Anna Mani had successfully published five papers, completed her Ph.D. dissertation, and started a graduate program at Imperial College, London.

Her contribution towards IMD

In 1948,  Anna Mani returned back to India and started working for the India Meteorological Department (IMD), where she helped in designing manufacturing its own weather instruments.

She was also an early advocate of alternative energy sources.

During the 1950s, she established a network of solar radiation monitoring stations and published several papers on sustainable energy measurement.

In 1987, she won the INSA K. R. Ramanathan Medal for her remarkable contributions to science. Manni was also appointed as a Trustee of the Raman Research Institute in Bangalore after her retirement.
