Why dispute over Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah in Mathura? Petitions pile up, ‘remove mosque’ plea is latest

In latest development, a lawsuit has been admitted by court which demands that mosque be removed from the spot as it was built on the birthplace of Lord Krishna.

New Delhi: While the Gyanvapi mosque controversy and discovery of Shivling inside the premises continues to remain at the centrestage of heated political discourse, the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah dispute is grabbing headlines.

In past few days, a slew of petitions have been filed in court claiming that the Idgah was built after demolishing the temple and corrective course must be set in motion. Other petition demanded that videography survey of the disputed structure should be allowed by the court, on lines of Gyanvapi mosque.

A group of petitioners including Manish Yadav, Mahendra Pratap Singh and Dinesh Sharma sought appointment of an Advocate Commissioner for conducting video survey of the Shahi Idgah premises. Petitioners said that Shahi Idgah mosque was raised on the land, that belonged to the temple and demanded that the same be returned to the Hindu deity.

In latest development, a lawsuit has been admitted by court which demands that mosque be removed from the spot as it was built on the birthplace of Lord Krishna.

Krishna Janmabhoomi dispute

Petitioners claimed ownership of 13.37 acres of land of Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi and also demanded removal of Shahi Idgah mosque. The petitioners demanded that the Idgah built on Trust’s land be declared illegal & demolished and the land should be handed over to the de-facto owner of the land, Shri Krishan Virajman.

A similar suit was filed in a Mathura civil court on September 30, 2020 but the court had removed admission of the plea.

Plea to perform ‘Abhishek’ at Shahi Idgah complex

A petitioner has sought permission from the court to perform ‘abhishek of Bal Gopal’ (child deity) at the Lord Krishna’s birthplace which purportedly lies inside the Shahi Jama Masjid.

The plea was accepted by the court which set July 1 as the next date for hearing.

Krishna Janmabhoomi dispute

Hindu outfits maintain the real place of birth of Lord Krishna lies inside the Shahi Idgah complex and the devotees have been denied their right to worship at the original birthplace of Lord Krishna.

Taking stock of petitions, the Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court on May 12 also directed the Mathura court to dispose all the case related to Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah mosque dispute in 4 months.
