Yakub Memon’s grave in Mumbai ‘beautified’ with LED lights and marble slabs, “Attempt to turn it into Mazar”, says BJP

Memon was buried at the Bada Kabrastan site in South Mumbai which comes under the jurisdiction of the Burial Waqf Board

New Delhi: The 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon, who was hung and whose remains were buried in a South Mumbai graveyard, is in the news again over the ‘beautification’ of his grave.

Several images of his grave decorated with marble slabs and LED lights emerged online and erupted a major controversy.

The chairman of Juma Masjid confess that the grave was being decorated while claiming that no such permission was given in the matter.

Memon was buried at the Bada Kabrastan site which comes under the jurisdiction of the Burial Waqf Board.

Meanwhile, politics has begun over the matter with the Bharatiya Janta Party claiming that the ‘beautification work’ took place during the tenure of the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi government led by Uddhav Thackeray.

BJP further accused that attempts were underway to turn the grave into a Mazar (tomb), asking Thackeray, Sharad Pawar, and Rahul Gandhi to apologize to the people of Mumbai.

“Udhav Thackeray was the Chief Minister. During that period, the grave of the dreaded terrorist Yakub Memon, who carried out the 1993 bombings in Mumbai at the behest of Pakistan, turned into a tomb. This is their love for Mumbai, this is their patriotism?”, wrote BJP leader Ram Kadam on Twitter while sharing several pics of the now-modified place.

According to the news reports, apart from placing marble boundaries on the grave and installing LED lights around it, the grave is further being guarded 24 hours a day.
