Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh, once considered a BIMARU state, is now registering several improvements in healthcare services due to the efforts of the Yogi government. The state has received several awards for its better performance in healthcare services in 2023.
The Yogi Adityanath-led government has taken significant steps to make the state a hub for medicine production. Today, the state is witnessing the establishment of Medical Device Park, Bulk Drug Park, and MedTech Park. Additionally, the Yogi government, which is working on treatment at zero-pocket expense, has done a lot of commendable work.
This year, the Ministry of Medical Health and Family Welfare has given National Quality Assurance Certificate to 81 medical units of 46 districts for providing quality health services to the district hospitals of the state. This includes 43 district-level, 16 community health centers, and 22 primary health centers. Additionally, other medical units in the state have also been awarded NQA certificate.
SBA training for reduction in maternal-infant mortality rate
The Yogi government is promoting Skilled Birth Attendant (SBA) training to reduce the maternal-infant mortality rate in the state. This initiative aims to enhance the capabilities of ANMs, LHV (Lady Health Visitors), staff nurses, and AYUSH women doctors deployed at delivery centers in the state to provide 100 percent safe delivery facilities to pregnant women.
The primary goal is to decrease the maternal mortality rate from the current 167 per lakh deliveries (as per National Family Health Survey-5) to 70 by the year 2030. Similarly, the target for reducing the neonatal mortality rate (per thousand live births) from the current 28 to 12 by 2030 has been set.
The training included information on the active management of the third stage of labor to prevent infections effectively. Approximately five thousand ANMs, LHVs, staff nurses, and AYUSH women doctors in the state have undergone SBA training.
Significant steps taken to make the state a hub for medicine production
In 2023, the Yogi government took major steps towards the construction of Medical Device Park on about 350 acres of land in Yamuna Authority, a Bulk Drug Park on about 2,000 acres in Lalitpur, and a Jewar Medtech Park. In addition to this, the state government increased the number of seats for MBBS in government colleges by more than 1838 and in the private sector by more than 2150.
Furthermore, the number of seats for nursing has been increased to over 7,000, and paramedical seats to over 5,000. The construction of 22 new medical colleges is underway in the state, with some nearing completion and others in the final stages.
KGMU and SGPGI received several gifts from the government
It is noteworthy that the Kidney transplant, which was stopped due to some technical reasons in KGMU, has been started again. A total of five patients have undergone transplants at KGMU this year. Additionally, a PET scan machine, which plays a crucial role in the detection of cancer, has been installed within the premises.
Besides, OPD for IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) was initiated at Queen Mary’s Hospital, freeing infertility patients from going to private institutions. Notably, the cost of this treatment at the medical college is around Rs 35-40 thousand, making it more affordable compared to private institutions that often charge several lakhs of rupees.
A total of 15 emergency beds were increased in SGPGI. The current year has been favorable for Lohia Institute as well, with the complete integration of the hospital into the institute. A new emergency unit has been established, incorporating pathology and radiology services. Thalassemia patients have received a dedicated ward.
Furthermore, a 300-bed hostel was also inaugurated in the Maternal and Child Hospital premises of the institute. Modular Pediatric ICU and maternal ICU are also ready. For the first time this year, OPD for IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) was started in the campus.
