World Environment Day 2023: History, Significance and Theme

This year marks the completion of 50 years of designation of World Environment Day and the theme for this year is ‘BeatPlasticPollution’.

New Delhi: World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 every year in order to raise awareness of preserving the environment. World environment day is the platform to spread awareness of sustainable development around the world. In the current situation where nature is overutilized, it is very important to consider the matter seriously. It is very important to preserve nature and natural resources for the future generation so that they do not get deprived of these natural resources. Millions of people celebrate this day and participate in environmental conservation programs.

World Environment Day: History

If we look back to the history of World Environment Day, it was first recognized in the year 1972 when United Nations Conference on the  Human Environment was held in Stockholm, Sweden. As a result of the conference, United Nations Environment Program was established on June 15 and the UNEP proposed a special to observe as the World Environment Day. Considering the proposal, United Nations General Assembly designated June 5 as World Environment Day. The first Environment Day was celebrated in 1973 with the Theme –One Earth.

World Environment Day will be hosted by Cote’d’ivoire and will be supported by the Netherlands. The focus of the UNEP will be on finding the solution to beat plastic pollution. The government will tackle, how one can reduce the pollution caused by plastic.

It is a platform that advocates for a greener and safer Environment and asks the government to prioritize and enact such laws that can help to prevent the Environment and reduce its exploitation. The protection of the environment is a global challenge as well as a global need. Therefore it is very important to bring the world together to contribute to this noble cause.
