Asian Games 2023, Volleyball: India crushes Chinese Taipei to sail into qaurter finals

Indian volleyball team defeated the higher ranked Chinese Taipei in straight sets.

New Delhi: The Indian volleyball team have continued its rise in the Asian Games 2023 after defeating the higher-ranked and the defending bronze medallist Chinese Taipei by 3-0 in straight sets of 25-22, 25-22, and 25-21, in the pre-quarterfinal clash.

India was struggling at the beginning of both the first sets but managed to keep hold of their nerves and made a comeback to win both sets.

India riding high on Muthusamy’s defence and Vinit’s spiking skills never let the Chinese Taipei have any space to breathe and finally helped the Indian team reach the quarterfinal round in the Asian Games 2023.

Interestingly, this is the first time the Indian volleyball team have qualified for the 1 to 6 (Quarterfinal) round of the Asian Games tournament.

India has come out of nowhere to be one of the favourites of the tournament.

Indian volleyball team, who ranks 73rd in the world rankings, have now defeated world-ranked 27 Korea and world-ranked 43rd Chinese Taipei in back-to-back matches.

India also finished on the top of their group after defeating Cambodia 3-0, and the defending silver medallist Republic of Korea by 3-2 in the group stages.

India will now be looking to add one more medal to the Indian medal tally in the Asian Games 2023, when they will face the Japanese team on September 24.

Earlier, in the day, the Indian men’s table-tennis team led by Achanta Sharath Kamal started their campaign on a high note after defeating Yemen by 3-0 in the ‘Group F’, preliminary round and will now face Singapore in their next match at 3:30 p.m. IST on September 22.
