Commonwealth Games 2022: Check out top 5 medal contenders for India on day 7

Murali Sreeshankar and  Muhammed Annes Yahiya will be jumping for the medal in the Men’s Long Jump finals, whereas Sakeena Khatun, Manpreet Kaur, Parmjeet Singh and Sudhir will lift to finish on the podium in para-powerlifting events.

New Delhi: Indian athletes added five medals to the tally on day 6, and with four medal events in two sports on day 7, the athletes will look out to bring glory to the nation. Murali Sreeshankar and  Muhammed Annes Yahiya will be jumping for the medal in the Men’s Long Jump finals, whereas Sakeena Khatun, Manpreet Kaur, Parmjeet Singh and Sudhir will lift to finish on the podium in para-powerlifting events.

On the other hand, following Nikhat Zareen and Hussamuddin, Indian boxers will look to confirm a medal by winning their quarterfinal bouts. Amit Panghal, Rohit Tokas, Jasmine and Sagar will be battling for a place in the semis on day 7.

Here is a list of top medal contenders for India on day 7:

1. Murali Sreeshankar

Murali Sreeshankar was the first and the last athlete in the Men’s Long Jump qualification round to jump over the 8 m mark to automatically qualify for the finals. He also made it to the finals of the World Athletics Championships in Oregon and is a strong contender for a medal. He jumped 8 m in the qualification and 7.96 m in the finals at Oregon.

Following the footsteps of Tejaswin Shankar, Murali will look out to bring the second athletics medal for India. He will be seen in action at 12:12 am IST.

2. Sakeena Khatun

India won a medal in para-powerlifting in the 2018 Commonwealth Games as Sachin Chaudhary brought home bronze whereas Sakeena Khatun finished sixth last time. She is a strong contender this time and she will look out to finish on the podium in Birmingham. She already has a CWG bronze to her name which she won in the Glasgow games.

Sakeena will be fighting for a medal at 7:38 pm IST in the Women’s Lightweight Para-Powerlifting event.

3. Manpreet Kaur

Manpreet recently won a bronze medal at the Pyeongtaek 2022 Asia Oceania Open Championships in South Korea. She will be competing in the Women’s Lightweight Para-Powerlifting event along with Sakeena on day 7.

Manpreet Kaur will be seen lifting weights at 7:38 pm IST.

4. Parmjeet Singh

Parmjeet was another bronze medallist at the Pyeongtaek 2022 Asia Oceania Open Championships and he also won a bronze at the World Para-Powerlifting Championships in 2021. With personal best lifts of 160 and 163 kg in South Korea, he has a chance to lay his hands on a medal in Birmingham.

He will be in action at 9:00 pm IST.

5. Sudhir

Asian Games medallist and Tokyo Paralympics participant, Sudhir, will play his match in the Men’s heavyweight Para-Powerlifting. He is another athlete in the powerlifting contingent who is strong enough to get a medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games.

He will be seen playing at 1:30 am IST.
