ICC World Cup 2023: Angelo Mathews blasts Bangladesh over ‘timed out’, shares ‘video proof’ to counter Shakib’s call

Angelo Mathews became the first player in the history of cricket to be deemed timed out, in his match against Bangladesh.

New Delhi: Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews was not a happy man on Monday, as before his team lost the game the game against Bangladesh, he registered his mane in the history books of cricket as he became the first player in the history of cricket to be deemed timed-out.

Angelo Mathews, in the post-match conference, tears down the Bangladesh cricket team and Shakib Al Hasan, by saying, “In my 15 years, I have never seen a team going down to this level.”

He also said, “I haven’t done anything wrong. I had two minutes to get ready which I did but there was an equipment malfunction and I don’t know where common sense gone. It was disgraceful from Shakib and Bangladesh.”

I was there in time

Mathews further said, “If they want to play cricket like that, stoop to that level, it is something wrong drastically. If I got late, past my two minutes and the law says I have to get ready in two minutes, I still had five more seconds to go.”

“I am not saying things on my own, we have video proof which we will pit out later,” Mathews said.

Interestingly, according to a video released by Star Sports, Mathews did make his ground with still 10 seconds to spare.

No respect left for Shakib

Mathews, in the conference, admitted that he had lost all the respect he had for Shakib by saying, “Until today I had utmost respect for him and Bangladesh team, obviously we all play to win and if it is within rules it is fine. But within two minutes I was there…we have video evidence. We will bring out a statement later. I am talking with proof from the time the catch was taken and then I got to the crease.”

We respect those who respect us

After the match, Sri Lankan players refused to shake hands with the Bangladeshi team and walked out directly from the ground after the match was over.

Upon being asked about the Sri Lankan team’s refusal to shake hands with Bangladesh, Mathews said, “You want to respect people who respect us. We are all ambassadors of this beautiful game. If you don’t respect and use your common sense, then what more you can ask for.”

Shakib justifies his call

In the post-match ceremony, when Shakib was asked about the appeal, he said, “One of our fielders came to me and said if you appeal now, he’ll be out. Then I appealed, and the umpires asked me if I was serious or whether I am going to take it back. It’s in the laws. I don’t know if it’s right or wrong. I was at war, and I had to make a decision to make sure my team win. Right or wrong, there will be debates, but if it is in the rules, I don’t mind taking those chances.”

What happened

During the Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh match in the ICC World Cup 2023, on Monday, Sri Lanka was batting first, and they lost their fourth wicket at the 24.2 over mark. When Angelo Mathews walked out to bat, he took his stance but found out the strap of his helmet was broken.

Mathews asked for a helmet replacement, but before that could happen, the Bangladeshi team appealed for a time-out against him and despite all his efforts and explanation, Shakib refused to take back the appeal, and Mathews was deemed out.
