New Delhi: The Indian men’s hockey team locked horns with the Australian men’s hockey team in the Men’s Pool B of the Paris Olympics 2024. It was also India’s first win against Australia since 1972. It was the last pool game for both sides as the team went toe-to-toe against each other.
What happened in the match?
Abhishek, India’s forward opened the scoring for team India as he hit a tracer bullet against Australia in the dying minutes of the first quarter (3 minutes). Subsequently, India got its second goal from a penalty corner moments after the field goal kudos to Indian captain, ‘Sarpanch Sahab’- Harmanpreet Singh.

However, in the second quarter, the Kookaburras pulled one goal back as the Australian team looked ambitious to make a comeback with scores at 2-1. But destiny had something else stored for the Indian team.
As luck would have it, the Indian team got a penalty stroke after an Australian player stopped a direct ball into the goal. Indian skipper Harmanpreet Singh did not miss any opportunity and converted from the penalty stroke to take the score 3-1. Harman also got a golden opportunity in the 4th quarter when he swung a ball during the penalty corner. However, the ball was blocked by the Australian goalkeeper Andrew.
Australia managed to win a penalty stroke towards the dying moments of the game after a scuffle in the D-box. Subsequently, Blake Govers managed to convert a neat penalty stroke against PR Sreejesh thereby dwindling the gap in the scoreboard (3-2). But the Indian team kept its calm as they managed to seal the game 3-2 in their favour.
