Lalit Kumar Modi was born in Delhi in 1963 into one of India’s leading business families. He studied engineering and business administration in the USA. He married Minal Modi in 1991 who died due to cancer in 2018.

It is reported that he had pitched the idea of a new 50-over domestic league but it the Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) showed less interest in it. He is best known as the first chairman and the Commissioner of the Indian Premier League, which was started in 2008. The idea was put into effect just after India won the first T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007.

However, he had to leave the BCCI following the suspension in April 2010 on 22 charges that include awarding contracts to close friends, accepting kickbacks on broadcast deals, money laundering and betting.

He fled to London in May 2010, citing a threat to his life. In 2013, a BCCI committee under the supervision of the late Arun Jaitely found him guilty of eight charges such as signing a free commercial time deal without governing council’s approval, rigging bids, favouring the World Sports Group over TV rights and planning a rival cricket league.

In 2017, International Criminal Police Organisation, Interpol denied processing a Red Corner notice against the former IPL chief. In 2018, India demanded from the UK Government to extradite Modi soon.
