New Delhi: 10-year-old Emma Lou won the nationwide Commonwealth Games mascot designing competition held in the UK for 5-15-year-olds. She is the designer behind the CWG mascot, ‘Perry the Bull’. Recently, the official YouTube channel of the Birmingham games released a video in which Lou can be seen meeting Perry along with a presenter.

In the video, the presenter and the mascot can be seen surprising the 10-year-old with the news of her winning the competition. Lou told that she felt amazing and she did not expect this to happen. Her father was filled with joy and felt proud of her daughter. He also added that as a father he can inspire her, but this time she is the one who has inspired others.

Lou, explaining her design choice said, “It has hexagons because it has three equilateral triangles.” When asked about the significance of geometry, she added, “It means everyone relies on each other.” She told that the reason for selecting the bull was the famous bullring at Birmingham, which is the host city.

For the competition, the kids in the age group of 5-15 years, had to create a mascot to reflect the identity, heritage, and culture of Birmingham and the West Midlands. The winning design was combined with the findings of the first-ever Visual Mascot Summit hosted by Olympic heptathlon champion and President of Commonwealth Games England Denise Lewis OBE and TV Presenter Radzi Chinyanganyafrom Wolverhampton. Later, 50 children across Birmingham and West Midlands developed the mascot’s detailed characteristics, values, and movements, adding to Perry’s personality.

The Commonwealth Games will be held from July 28 to August 8 in Birmingham, UK.
