Meg Lanning to captain Delhi Capitals in WPL 2023, Jemimah Rodrigues to be her deputy

New Delhi: Australian T20 World Cup winning captain Meg Lanning has been named as the skipper for Delhi Capital in Women’s Premier League 2023. Lanning recently became the captain to win the most number of ICC trophies, which include four T20 World Cups and one World Cup. Her leadership and experience will be crucial for DC’s success.

Indian star batter Jemimah Rodrigues has been named the vice-captain of the team. Delhi Capitals was the last team to name their captain and chose another Australian name for the role. Meanwhile, Australian openers Beth Mooney and Alyssa Healy will captain Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz respectively.

Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur is leading Mumbai Indians while Royal Challengers Bangalore will be led by India’s vice-captain Smriti Mandhana.

Lanning on becoming DC’s captain said that it is a proud moment for her to be part of Delhi Capitals and lead the side. She added that it is about enjoying and getting the best out of herself. She called WPL a ‘massive moment’ for cricket. Lanning added that in India cricket is ‘people’s lives’ and WPL will grow in the coming years.

Meg Lanning has also led Melbourne Stars in the Women’s Big Bash League but has not won a trophy yet, and she has also been part of Trent Rockets in The Hundred.

The batter has led Australia in 100 T20Is, which is the most by any captain in the shortest format of the game. While the Australian team has been strong and dominating throughout, it will interesting to see, how Lanning leads her franchise side.

WPL will begin on March 4 in Mumbai and DC will begin its campaign on March 5 against RCB.
