New Delhi: Sri Lanka’s ambidextrous bowler and hard-hitting batsman has set a new record of hitting a fifty-plus score in each of his first eight Tests since debut. In the process, Mendis surpassed Indian great Sunil Gavaskar who has so far only 6 centuries to his name. Before him, Pakistan’s Shaud Shakeel held the record as he had a 50+ score in each of the first seven Tests that he played.
Mendis set this record when he came out to bat towards the end of Day 1. For Kamindu it was a world record eighth consecutive fifty since the 25-year-old’s debut against Australia at the same venue two years ago. Apart from Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, Dimuth Karunaratne and Angelo Mathews all chipped in with handy contributions.
Most 50+ scores since debut:
- Kamindu Mendis (8)
- Saud Shakeel (7)
- Bert Sutcliffe (6)
- Saeed Ahmed (6)
- Basil Butcher (6)
- Sunil Gavaskar (6)
Chandimal notched up his century in some style while Mathews inked a new chapter in the record books of Cricket history. Mathews became only the sixth cricketer to make 2,000 Test runs at a single venue. The list includes the likes of Joe Root and Graham Gooch who have scored on the notoriously bowler-friendly Galle pitch.
Kamindu and Mathews are still batting at the crease stitching together a healthy partnership which can take the Lankan score well past 400.
