Roger Federer announces retirement from competitive Tennis

The 41-year-old Tennis star shared an audio note and a heartfelt letter on Twitter making the announcement. He stated that it was a ‘bittersweet decision’ for him.

New Delhi: Tennis legend Roger Federer has announced that he is retiring from competitive Tennis and will not be taking part in ATP Tours and Grand Slams after the upcoming Laver Cup. The 41-year-old Tennis star shared an audio note and a heartfelt letter on Twitter making the announcement. He stated that it was a ‘bittersweet decision’ for him.

In the note, he expressed his gratitude towards the people he has met in the due course of his more than 24 years of career. He thanked his friends, competitors and fans, and expressed that the last few years have been injury prone for him and at the age of 41, it is tough to keep up with his health and play competitive Tennis.

The Switzerland Tennis star went on to thank his wife for travelling for his game for the last 20 years even while she was 8-month pregnant and thanked his parents. He also took the opportunity to express gratitude for his team that has Ivan, Dani, Roland, Savi and Pierre and also thanked his sponsors for helping him in his journey.

In his career of about 24 years, he has played more than 1500 competitive games and has 103 ATP Singles titles including 20 Grand Slams. His last Grand Slam came in 2018 in the Australian Open where he won against Marin Cilic in the finals, while he won his last Wimbledon in 2017 against the same opponent. His four out of 20 Grand Slam titles came by beating his nemesis Nadal and Djokovic at their peak.

He was not part of the US Open 2022 and will be making a comeback to the court in the Laver Cup, which will be his last competitive tournament. The Laver Cup will be a three-day tournament starting on September 23.
