T20 World Cup: Australia’s Matthew Wade tests +ve for COVID-19, rules don’t bar him from playing

Australia is likely to play with Wade as their backup wicketkeeper Josh Inglis was injured and replaced by all-rounder Cameron Green.

New Delhi: After Australia’s spinner Adam Zampa tested positive for COVID-19, the team needs to deal with another case in the form of their wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade. It has been a trouble for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup hosts as they have a game against arch-rivals England on October 28. Wade also did not go for training at the Junction Oval.

While Adam Zampa missed the game against Sri Lanka, there is a chance Wade will play the next game. As per the tournament rules, a player is allowed to play despite a positive COVID-19 test. Wade has minor symptoms and will need to travel to the ground separately. He will also not be allowed to use the team’s dressing room. Australia is likely to play with Wade as their backup wicketkeeper Josh Inglis was injured and replaced by all-rounder Cameron Green.

There is a chance in case the selectors want to fly in Alex Carey or Josh Philippe, but that would mean that Wade is out of the remainder of the tournament. Here the team management and the selectors have a choice to make and it is a tough one as Matthew Wade has been in good form.

Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell was seen with wicketkeeping gloves as he did a session for the camera. There is a slight chance that David Warner will come for the wicketkeeping services as he did in a Test match replacing Brad Haddin. Captain Aaron Finch has also kept wickets for his BBL side Melbourne Renegades. While Zampa is likely to return for the next game, Wade’s COVID has posed some serious problems for Australia.
