“They call it a team, but it isn’t a team…”: Gary Kirsten criticises Pakistan’s poor WC performance

According to head coach Gary Kirsten, the main problem in the Pakistani cricket team is the lack of cohesion.

New Delhi: This World Cup has become one of the poorest campaigns for the Pakistani team in any ICC event. Naturally, the beleaguered team of Pakistan has been the recipient of scathing remarks and cruel scrutiny. Already the ex-players have lashed out at Babar Azam over his captaincy.

Many anecdotal incidents have been adjoined with Babar’s captaincy, lack of scoring runs, and apparent ‘favouritism’ towards some players. Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjarekar had even called for Ramiz Raja to bail out Babar and his team from this precarious condition.

Pakistan entered the tournaments as one of the favourites to complete the unfinished job they had reached very close last time. However, from being the runners-up in the last edition of the T20 World Cup, there has been an astonishing downfall of the team. The men in green suffered agonising defeats against the USA and India.

Head coach Gary Kirsten’s assessment

According to head coach Gary Kirsten, the main problem in the team is the lack of cohesion. Kirsten did not go easy on his scrutiny and analysis of the entire team. Gary was part of India’s winning team in the 2011 ODI World Cup, now has a bitter pill to swallow seeing his team thrown out of the group stages.

Furthermore, the former South African cricketers added, “There’s no unity in Pakistan’s team. They call it a team, but it isn’t a team. They aren’t supporting each other…” Moreover, according to a popular media outlet, Geosuper.tv 4; Kirsten is also not happy with the level of fitness that is on display by the team.

Pakistan’s cricketing future is capsizing like a sinking ship. Although the men in green have earned the tag of being an ‘unpredictable’ side, this lack of consistency has been the biggest curse for the team. The question that the authorities are staring at is whether there will be a change in the entire hierarchy or will Babar and Co. regroup at the earliest to save their cricketing legacy from fading!
