Veteran car racer KE Kumar passes away at 59 due to crash on track

He crashed with a competitor during a saloon car racing as his car slid across the track and landed on the roof after crashing into the fence.

New Delhi: KE Kumar, an Indian car racer, died on January 8, at the age of 59, due to a crash on the track. Kumar was participating in the second round of the MRF MMSC FMSCI Indian National Car Racing Championship at Madras International Circuit in Chennai when he met with an accident. He crashed with a competitor during a saloon car racing as his car slid across the track and landed on the roof after crashing into the fence.

The crashed car was immediately shown a red flag to stop and Kumar was taken for a medical examination by the medical staff at the race. He was then driven to a hospital in an ambulance, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The remainder of the day’s schedule was cancelled as a mark of respect to KE Kumar, who was also a member of MMSC.

A video of the accident also surfaced on the internet.

Chairman of the MMSC FMSCI National Car Racing Championship, Vicky Chandok, in a statement, said that it was the ‘most unfortunate incident’. He added that Kumar was an experienced racer and he knew him for decades, both as a friend and as a competitor. He said that MMSC and the entire fraternity mourn Kumar’s death and pay condolences to his family. Chandok added that the national governing body of the sport, FMSCI and organising body MMSC have decided to launch a probe into the accident.
