Vinesh Phogat fails to exact her redemption; disqualified from the Final of the Women’s Freestyle 50kg

Indian gold medal hopes were dashed to the ground as Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified before the finals.

New Delhi: In the latest development from the world of the Paris Olympics 2024, Indian medal hopes were dashed to the ground as Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified before the finals.

Official statement of the IOC:

“It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand.”

Indian medal hopes meanwhile will rely heavily on Avinash Sable who is set to take part in the 3000m Steeplechase Final. Sable’s event is scheduled to take place at 1:13 AM on the Indian Standard Time (i.e. on the 6th of August).

Furthermore, Mirabai Chanu, the silver medalist of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 will also look to win the gold medal this time around. Vinesh is currently admitted to a hospital after she was dehydrated due to her rigorous dieting routine and her physical exertion. Although this news is a big heartbreak for Indian fans, the historic feat that Phogat had managed to achieve was appreciated by the netizens. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also appreciated the effort of the Indian grappler and posted on his social media.
