
New Delhi: Neeraj Chopra created history for Indian athletics by winning a silver medal in Men’s Javelin Throw finals at the World Athletics championships 2022. It is India’s first silver and second medal overall at the championships. His fourth attempt 88.13 m aided his medal victory.
Youngster Rohit Yadav also played in the Men’s Javelin Throw finals and ended up at the 10th position with a throw of 78.72 m. On the other hand, the morning (in India) saw India’s first triple jumper playing finals at the championships. Eldhose Paul stood 9th in the finals.

Neeraj Chopra opened the finals, but as fans expected him to do great, he ended up with a foul throw in his first attempt. While his rival Anderson Peters threw 90.21 m in his first attempt. In the second attempt, Chopra could manage a throw of just 82.39 m and his face showed disappointment as he knew it was not enough for a medal. The wind was flowing in the opposite direction which hampered everyone’s performance. Rohit Yadav managed 78.05 in the second attempt, while Peters threw 90.46 m. The second round also saw the Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch throwing 87.23 m.
In the third attempt, Neeraj got back on track with a throw of 86.37 m but was at the 4th spot after this. On the other hand, the last four throwers were eliminated, which included Rohit Yadav who threw 78.72 m in his final attempt. The fourth attempt saw Neeraj Chopra’s silver medal throw where he managed a distance of 88.13 m. He surpassed Jakub Vadlejch’s 88.09 m to take the second spot. The fifth and sixth attempts for Chopra were fouls whereas Peters threw the javelin at an exceptional distance of 90.54 m to win the gold medal.
Men’s Triple Jump (Finals)
Eldhose Paul, who already created history, was playing his first finals at the championships. In his first attempt, he jumped 16.37 m while the Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Pedro Pichardo came up with this season’s best jump of 17.95 m.

With the win assistance of +1.1, Paul bettered his first attempt and also his best jump in the qualification round as he jumped 16.79 m. However, he was eliminated after his third attempt of 13.86 m. Pichardo went on to win the gold medal, while Burnika Faso’s Hugues Fabrice Zango won the silver with an attempt of 17.55 m and China’s Yaming Zhu won the bronze by jumping a distance of 17.31 m. Paul ended up with the 9th spot out of 12 in the finals.

Men’s 4×400 m Relay (Heats)
Playing in Heat 1 against tough opponents like the USA, Japan and Jamaica, the Indian team did not qualify for the finals. The Indian team consisting of Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi, Naganathan Pandi and Rajesh Ramesh, ended up with a timing of 3:07.29 and stood 6th in Heat 1 and 12th overall.
The Indian team set the Asian Record of 3:00.25 at the Tokyo Olympics but ended up 7.04 seconds late in Oregon.
