Maharashtra came under the President's Rule yesterday after President Ram Nath Kovind gave his approval for the requisite notification.

President Ram Nath Kovind also greeted citizens on the festival. He urged the people to bring happiness in the lives of needy by lighting the lamp of love, care and sharing.

President Ram Nath Kovind unveiled a bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the Centre of Peace Education at Miriam College on Sunday.

Kovind said that he feels honoured to unveil Gandhi's bust in the Philippines, which is the land of Jose Rizal. "Both Mahatma Gandhi and Jose Rizal believed in the power of peace and non-violence. The avenue in New Delhi named after your national hero continues to inspire and motivate us."

The President will head to Tokyo on October 21. He will attend various ceremonies related to the Emperor Naruhito's enthronement and also take part in a banquet hosted by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The ceremony will be attended by leaders from all parts of the world.

Birla said the festival, signifying the victory of good over the forces of evil, symbolizes the values of courage and sacrifice and of upholding the principles of dharma in all stages of life.
