Google to delete user’s location history if they visit abortion clinics in United States

Among the list, other places include fertility centres, addiction treatment facilities, and weight-loss centres.

New Delhi: Announcing on Friday, the tech giant, Google stated that it will delete users’ location history if they visit abortion clinics, domestic violence shelters, and other places in the United States.

The senior vice president at Google, Jen Fitzpatrick in a blog post wrote, “If our systems identify that someone has visited one of these places, we will delete these entries from Location History soon after they visit,” reported AFP.

He further added, “This change will take effect in the coming weeks.” He stated that the company takes the privacy data of users into serious account.

Notably, such a step will be only taken in places where privacy is needed. Among the list, other places include fertility centres, addiction treatment facilities, and weight-loss centres.

US Supreme Court bans abortion

The announcement has been made after a week the US Supreme Court made the decision to omit the right of American women to undergo an abortion. The decision has been applied in dozen states either to ban or restrict the procedure and leading to mass protests across the country.

However, politicians and activists have been requesting tech giants limit the information they collect to avoid being used by law enforcement for abortion investigations and prosecutions.
